(1) In a multithreaded system, a thread is one process that occurs simultaneously with other processes. See
multithreading.
(2) A sequence of messages on the same topic in an email, newsgroup, forum, blog or groupware program. See

(4) (Thread) A low-power smart home and IoT network protocol developed by Nest Labs. Launched in 2015 and supporting the IP protocol (IPv6), Thread is an alternative to Wi-Fi for low-power devices that rely on batteries. Based on IEEE 802.15.4, a Thread network can support up to 250 devices and be configured in a star or mesh topology. Encryption is based on AES-128. Thread uses the same radio technology as Zigbee but with IP connectivity.
Thread Border Routers
To connect a Thread network to a home network router via Wi-Fi or Ethernet, a Thread border router is required. Any device that supports the Thread standard has a constant power supply and a connection to the home IP network can be a border router. Amazon Echo and Google Nest devices, along with Apple HomePods and Samsung SmartThings, can be activated as a border router. See
Zigbee,
Matter,
IPv6 and
6LoWPAN.
