Definition: Matter

An application layer protocol for smart home devices from the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA). Introduced in 2022, Matter was designed as a common high-level language to enable all smart home devices to interact with each other. Using Bluetooth for pairing, devices transmit over Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Thread. Matter supports thousands of devices per network and encryption via the AES-256 standard.
