Definition: content moderation

The detection and removal of false information on websites and social media posts. This is one of the most controversial subjects of the Internet era, especially in the U.S., where the First Amendment guarantees free speech. X/Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok are the sites most subjected to criticism regarding the lack of sufficient content moderation. For decades, various Internet forums have been moderated by an individual, but the number of users is minuscule compared to the major social sites.

User Moderation
Information is moderated automatically by users who decide what to forward and what comments to make about another post. The viral nature of social media, which can reach millions of people within a short time, has made content moderation a topic of major concern. See disinformation.
