A free online encyclopedia in the English language that was founded by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger, who later founded Wikipedia. A volunteer service online from 1999 to 2003, Nupedia articles were written by experts and peer reviewed. However, only a handful were ever published, and those articles were transferred to Wikipedia. See
