Definition: neuroplasticity

The ability of the human brain to reorganize based on the experience of living. Neuroplasticity involves fast changes at connection points (synapses) and the slower development of new branches (dendrites) and neurons (neurogenesis). The brain has more than 100 trillion synapses between as many as 100 billion neurons.

Routine tasks are repeated neural pathways; however, new experiences promote neuroplasticity. Quality sleep and controlling stress along with mental and physical activities also support neuroplasticity.

Although the AI artificial neural network (ANN) was modeled after the human brain, and both use interconnected neurons, the ANN uses mathematical calculations, but the human brain uses biological plasticity that enables it to rewire itself, a phenomenon that is not fully understood. See neural network.
