In the cloud refers to storage and/or processing that takes place in a network server rather than the user's computer. Today, the cloud is a datacenter somewhere on the planet connected to the Internet. Before the Internet, "the cloud" referred to a company's private local area network (LAN) just as often as it referred to a public wide area network (WAN). See
