In the cloud refers to storage and/or processing that takes place in a network server rather than the user's computer. Today, the cloud is generally a cloud computing datacenter somewhere on the planet connected to the Internet. However, before the Internet, "in the cloud" always referred to an organization's private local or wide area network (LAN or WAN), and it may still be used in that manner. See
