Definition: IRED


(InfraRed Emitting Diode) An LED that emits infrared light. IREDs are widely used in audio and video remote controls as well as the IrDA ports on computers and peripherals. Remote controls typically transmit at very low data rates over distances up to 25 feet. IrDA transmission is much faster, but usually within a distance of only a couple feet.
