Definition: Cromemco


An electronics and personal computer company that was founded in 1974 by Harry Garland and Roger Melen. Its first products were a digital camera for the Altair computer and first color graphics card for computers that used the S-100 bus, also developed for the Altair. In 1976, Cromemco released its first computer, the Z1, which used the Z80 microprocessor and CP/M operating system. The company also created a programmable memory board for the Altair and S-100 computers. In 1987, Dynatech, a major customer, acquired the company. See Z80, S-100 bus and Bytesaver.
