Definition: wired world


The world we live in today where everybody, at least theoretically, can be linked to everyone else. The wired world began with the cellphone in the 1980s; however, it took a giant leap forward with the advent of the smartphone in the late 2000s. As of 2022, almost half the population of the planet is estimated to have a smartphone.

Although authoritarian countries can ban local Internet access, they cannot ban satellite access without shooting the satellites out of the sky. In the 2022 Russia/Ukraine war, satellite Internet gave the Ukrainians access to the world and invaluable intelligence after local cell towers were destroyed. See satellite Internet.
