Definition: wired access point


A redundant reference to a base station that connects a wireless system to a wired land-based system. Access points provide Wi-Fi, and except for cellular Wi-Fi service, all access points plug directly into a switch or router via wired Ethernet (see cellular hotspot). Sometimes WAP refers to a wired access point; however, it more precisely refers to the Wireless Application Protocol (see WAP).
