Creating a website and placing it on the Web server. A website is a collection of HTML pages with the home page typically named
index.html or
index.htm. Websites are designed using Web authoring software which provides a graphical layout capability along with hand coding in HTML. Distributing the site requires copying the resulting HTML pages and graphic elements into the appropriate folders on the server. See
Web authoring software,
content management system and
HTML editor.

Web authoring programs such as NetObjects Fusion automatically create a website hierarchy that can be edited. Such programs let developers place text and images on a page and automatically create the navigation that links all the pages together. (Screenshot courtesy of Website Pros, Inc.)
