Definition: virtual power plant

Sources of energy that augment the U.S. electrical grid. Virtual power plants (VPPs) comprise a network of solar farms as well as battery storage both at industrial and consumer levels. For example, the stored electricity in batteries derived from solar panels can be dispatched to increase electrical demand as required.

A Home VPP
To recover from a local power outage, homeowners can employ their own VPP by reversing the electricity flow in their electric vehicles, hopefully with a full charge. See electric vehicle and EV charging.
