Definition: tracking


(1) For keeping track of exercise and health, see fitness tracker.

(5) Synchronizing a reading or writing mechanism with a rotating platter. For example, the stylus must maintain smooth contact with the groove in a vinyl phonograph record. A laser must align itself precisely to the tracks of a CD.

(6) The consistent letterspacing of text. Tracking expands or reduces the space between letters. It differs from "kerning" because it is applied to an entire font, whereas kerning refers to specific letter pairs. See kerning.
