Definition: tethered drone

A non-wireless military drone that is tethered to its base station using a spool of very thin optical fiber many kilometers long. Tethered drones evade eavesdropping because wireless connectivity would be detected by the enemy.

Although tethered flying machines date back to the 1930s and tethered bombers were used in World Wat II, today's tethered drones increasingly use AI to locate targets. See UAV.
