Definition: tab hibernation

Preserving computer resources when a browser has too many open tabs. Tab hibernation removes the website from memory (RAM) but keeps the tab visible. When the tab is selected again, the website is retrieved. After browsing the Web for long periods, users often have dozens of open tabs, all of which take up the computer's primary resource. See tabbed browsing.
