Definition: synthetic biology

The creation of biological organisms. Synthetic biology uses genetic engineering to modify the genes in an organism; however, it is more comprehensive, leading to entirely new species. A common example of the two is a fish. A genetically modifed fish may grow faster, but synthetic biology could build a new kind of fish that eats pollutants to clean up the ocean. See genetic engineering.
