Definition: AGI

(1) (Advanced Geospatial Intelligence) See DOD intelligence glossary.

(2) (Artificial General Intelligence) A machine intelligence that resembles that of a human being. AGI (strong AI, true AI) is capable of solving many tasks, while narrow AI (weak AI, ordinary AI) deals with single-task applications such as virtual assistants, chatbots and robotic vacuum cleaners.

A true general-purpose AI has people concerned that too much control will be given to machines in the future. Although there are often laughable results from today's AI-based chatbots, they do perform amazingly well, and what is more extraordinary, they deliver results a thousand times faster than human beings. Nevertheless, the predictions for when AGI becomes commonplace run the gamut from "it's already here" to 2040. See GPT and ChatGPT.

Super AI
Super AI, also known as "artificial super intelligence" (ASI) goes beyond AGI, providing results greater than human reasoning. In other words, science fiction, or, as many believe, complete nonsense. The only thing certain is that the terminology used to define new AI systems will be confusing. See AI stages, AI, OpenAI, singularity, Turing test and Mechanical Turk.

AI Will Reign Supreme
MIT professor Max Tegmark's best-selling book postulates an AI that far exceeds human intelligence and literally takes over.
