Definition: stereo amplifier

A two-channel amplifier that requires a preamplifier. Such equipment ranges in price from under $100 to tens of thousands at the top end. Although a separate preamp and amp are often combined (see integrated amplifier), audiophiles with hefty budgets prefer an individual amplifier for each channel. The complete separation of left and right amplification ensures that there is no interference between signals. The cost is generally double that of a two-channel unit. See preamp.
