Redirected from: static IP

Definition: static IP address

A permanent numeric identification assigned by the network administrator to a node in a TCP/IP network. Static IP addresses are used for shared resources such as Web servers, printers, telephone PBXs and surveillance cameras.

ISPs assign static IP addresses to the networks of their business customers, which pay a premium over residential users. To avoid confusion and issues with users reaching their websites, public-facing Web servers must have non-changing IP addresses. See dynamic IP address and IP address.
