Definition: stand-alone access point


A Wi-Fi transmitter/receiver (transceiver). Stand-alone access points are typically found in commercial establishments. In the overwhelming majority of homes, a wireless router is used for Internet access, which includes the access point. See wireless router and access point.




Ceiling-Mounted Access Point
This access point (AP) in a private home obtains its power from the Ethernet cable, which is why there is only one wire going into the unit. The AP plugs into a router. See PoE.
