Definition: smart pager

An earlier two-way pager that let you send short messages using a small keyboard. Units typically contained a built-in address book and other messaging features. The Motorola PageWriter and Research in Motion (RIM) pagers provided platforms for third-party software and services. Smart pagers were intended for composing short messages, because typing on the tiny keyboard was tedious, especially for people with large hands. See BlackBerry.
