Definition: scalar processor


A CPU that performs computations on one number or one element of data at a time. The primary CPU in all general-purpose devices (desktop, laptop, smartphone, etc.) are scalar processors. This type of processor is known as a "single instruction stream single data stream" (SISD) CPU. Contrast with vector processor. See scalar.
