Redirected from: private mode

Definition: private browsing

(1) See anonymous Web surfing.

(2) Surfing the Web without leaving traces in the computer being used. Also called "porn mode." If people wish to keep their surfing habits private on their own computer or on a public computer, they can invoke the browser's private mode, and all cookies and cached files retrieved during the session, as well as the history of the session itself, will be deleted at the end. However, downloads and bookmarks set by the user are retained. Private browsing modes are known as InPrivate (IE), Private Browsing (Firefox and Safari) and Incognito (Chrome).

Manual Deletion Is Not Sufficient
Instead of using a private mode, any user can delete the browser cache and cookies at the end of a session. However, the private mode is much more isolating, although it does not guarantee 100% privacy. The Internet provider as well as the visited site have records of the IP address the browser request came from. See Tor, porn site, anonymous Web surfing, privacy browser and privacy search engine.
