Definition: polymathic AI

Cross-discipline AI. A polymathic AI system is one that is trained on multiple types of data; for example, text and equations or text and videos. Such models learn from one discipline and apply that knowledge to another.

Polymathic AI is said to create foundation models that think like human scientists and researchers. Humans commonly take what is learned in one discipline and apply it to another. For example, laws in physics are commonly applied to engineering.

From Caltech and Others
Founded in 2023, Polymathic AI is a research project from Caltech's Anima AI + Science Lab that is aimed at developing cross-discipline models in fields such as astrophysics, biology and chemistry. See polymathic AGI.
