Definition: phantom call

A telephone call that the user is not aware of. It may refer to a call made by accidentally pressing a preset on a cellphone to a computer application dialing up the Internet to send data to a website. The former causes an inordinate number of erroneous 911 calls each year, and each call must be given serious attention, while the latter may secretly capture behavior patterns for market research.
