Definition: TDM-to-packet conversion

Converting traditional voice traffic based on digital TDM circuits into IP packets and vice versa. TDM-to-packet conversion is increasingly performed in hardware, where packet engines perform the entire conversion including support for silence suppression, which accounts for dead space when both sides are not talking, as well as generating comfort noise so that the recipient does not experience complete silence in those dead spaces. See comfort noise, TDM and IP telephony.
