Definition: package


(1) A "software" package is a program ready to run. See application.

(2) A "chip" package is the housing that holds an integrated circuit. See chip package.

(3) In the Unix/Linux world, a package can contain an application, utility or operating system library. The package term implies that all the modules that are part of the software are compressed into a single file (see archive).
