Definition: overprovisioning


(1) Installing more hardware resources than are currently needed to remain at capacity in the event devices fail.

(2) The total storage capacity of an SSD, which is not made public. Flash memory cells fail over time, and most SSDs are overprovisioned with extra storage so that the drive retains its stated capacity over the years. See SSD and wear leveling.
