A socket on a computer or network device that accepts a cable, which in most cases is Ethernet. Local network ports (LAN ports) are wired to each other within a building or complex, whereas a wide area network port (WAN port) is connected to a modem that reaches the outside world. Because mobile devices have built-in Wi-Fi, they do not have a network port. See
