Definition: matrix router

A device used to switch audio or video signals to multiple destinations. It provides a one-to-one or one-to-many distribution, but not many-to-one. Matrix routers are typically designed for either analog or digital and either audio or video signals; however, sophisticated units can support all types, but on different ports.
