Definition: industrial Ethernet

Using the Ethernet protocol in data collection and process control networks that were previously dominated by slow speed serial links such as RS-232, RS-422 and RS-485. In addition, the use of standard Ethernet network devices such as hubs, switches and routers is often more economical than their counterpart serial components. See Ethernet, RS-232, RS-422 and RS-485.
