(4) To have a thorough understanding of a subject. The word comes from Robert Heinlein's 1961 science fiction novel "Stranger in a Strange Land." In Martian, grok means "to drink in thoroughly," but more specifically, it meant to take something in so thoroughly that it becomes part of you.
