Definition: encrypted email

Email that is cryptographically hidden in transit. Because most traffic over the Internet is automatically encrypted via the TLS protocol, email in transit is also encrypted. However, some email services provide additional security by keeping the content encrypted while it is stored on their servers; for example, see PGP and Proton Mail. See TLS, end-to-end encryption and zero-access encryption.
