Definition: embedded application


(1) A software application that permanently resides in an industrial or consumer device. Providing some type of control function and/or user interface, the software is typically stored in flash memory or a ROM. Contrast with an application in a general-purpose computer, which is called in from the storage drive or the network. See embedded system and embedded processor.

(2) A particular use of an embedded processor.
