Definition: electronic repossession

A device wired into a car ignition that can prevent it from starting. With dealers claiming fewer repossessions, devices may be remotely triggered after lights and beeps warn the driver that a payment is overdue. If people are stranded when the car is disabled, there is often a one-time restart.

Some systems require drivers to punch in the code they received after making their monthly payment. Units may include a GPS chip that transmits vehicle location to the dealer. Companies such as Pay Technologies and PassTime offer electronic repossession products.
