Definition: electric vehicle types


Following is a summary of the different kinds of electric vehicles (EVs) on the market. Mostly powered by batteries, EVs can also be powered by hydrogen gas (see fuel cell). See electric vehicle and EV charging.

   EV/BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle)
    e.g. Tesla, Chevrolet Bolt

   Runs on gas or battery
   HEV (Hybrid EV)
    e.g. Toyota Prius, Honda CR-V

   (NO CHARGING)
   Runs on gas with electric assist
   MHEV (Mild Hybrid EV)
    e.g. Ford Puma, Land Rover Evoque

   (CHARGING OPTIONAL)
   Runs on gas or battery
   PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid EV)
    e.g. Toyota Prius, Ford Escape
