Definition: external GPU

(external Graphics Processing Unit) A GPU that resides outside the computer. Often used to augment laptop computers that have limited built-in graphics capability, the external GPU (eGPU) is typically connected via a Thunderbolt or ExpressCard port. Considering these ports are not always available on many laptops, gaming enthusiasts have created custom configurations with adapters and cables hanging out of the bottom of the laptop that connect to an external GPU card plugged into an exposed power supply that would normally be inside a PC. See GPU.
