Definition: disk mirroring

Recording redundant data for fault tolerant operation. With disk mirroring, data are written on two independent partitions on the same drive or on two separate drives within the same computer. RAID 1 is the common protocol for disk mirroring, first accomplished with SCSI drives but later with less costly ATA (IDE) drives. Disk mirroring techniques apply equally to solid state drives (SSDs). See disk duplexing, RAID and mirroring.

Mirroring on a Budget
Years ago, Arco's DupliDisk was one of the first RAID 1 controllers for ATA drives. The motherboard cable plugged into the drive bay version (above) or a PCI card, and two cables connected the primary and secondary drives. If one drive failed, the other took over.
