Definition: digital measuring tape

An electronic measuring tape that has several advantages over a regular mechanical tape. Although regular measuring tapes may have both metric and imperial increments, most digital versions are able to switch between the two and display the converted numbers. Using the built-in laser, digital tapes enable one person to measure up to several hundred feet. The digital display reduces human error when reading measurements, and cloud backup may be available with app synchronization.

The Mileseey XTAPE1
The XTAPE1 digital measuring tape stores up to 30 measurements. With battery runtime lasting up to seven hours, the laser can measure up to 330 feet. Even the built-in 12-foot mechanical tape has a unique feature: the end (red arrow) can be moved about three millimeters to allow accurate measurements from either the outer or inner edge of an object. The XTAPE1's modular design allows the tape module to be upgraded without discarding the entire unit. (Image courtesy of Milessey Tools.)
