Definition: digital file

Everything permanently saved in a computer system is a digital file, identified by file name. An entire digital file, such as an executable program or document, is read into, and thus duplicated in, the computer's memory temporarily for execution, editing and display. However, when dealing with large databases, only parts of a file are read into memory for processing. See digital and memory.

Everything Stored Is a File
The common unit of storage no matter what the application is the file. See file.
