Redirected from: desktop virtual assistant

Definition: tabletop virtual assistant

A stationary virtual assistant that is placed on a table or desk at home or in the office. Amazon's Echo, more commonly referred to as Alexa, was the first.

Stand-alone tabletop assistants are not only invaluable for answering questions and setting timers and alarms like their mobile or computer counterparts, they can typically function as an audio or video intercom when units are placed throughout the home. However, unlike a virtual assistant in a smartphone that can call 911, in a crisis, a desktop assistant may be able to text an emergency contact that has been previously set up. See virtual assistant, Amazon Echo, Google Nest and Apple HomePod.

Alexa in the Kitchen
Four Amazon Echos (Alexas) are used in this home, and anyone can "drop in" from one unit to another.
