Definition: datacenter container

A self-contained module that includes a series of rack-mounted servers along with its own lighting, air conditioning, humidification and UPS system. Designed to be transported in a shipping container and deployed intact, it enables a complete datacenter to be installed in a fraction of the normal time, and it can redeployed just as easily. Only electrical and network hookup are required.

Datacenter Pods
Smaller datacenter containers may be called "containerized pods" or "cloud pods." See datacenter in a box.

Sun's Modular Datacenter
In 2008, Sun introduced its S20 Modular Datacenter. Holding as many as 250 servers in a highly efficient, 20x8' climate controlled module, the unit was shipped and installed intact. Other manufacturers have created similar solutions. (Image courtesy of Sun Microsystems, Inc.)
