Definition: datacenter bridging

Also called "datacenter Ethernet," "converged Ethernet" and "converged enhanced Ethernet," datacenter bridging (DCB) refers to a variety of Ethernet enhancements that eliminate packet loss when transmitting data to and from storage networks and clusters of servers.

Governed by the IEEE and IETF, datacenter bridging aims to provide "lossless Ethernet," which is contrary to normal Ethernet, whereby packets could be dropped without warning when traffic is congested. In the common TCP/IP network, the TCP layer is responsible for end-to-end integrity, not Ethernet. See Ethernet and TCP.
