Definition: field


A physical structure in a form, file or database that holds data. One or more bytes in size, a collection of fields makes up a data record. Common examples are ACCOUNT NUMBER, NAME, CITY, STATE and AMOUNT. The terms field and "box" are used synonymously; for example, a "search field" or "search box" on a Web page.




Fields Are the Basic Unit of Storage
Data elements describe the fields in a record. Data items are the data within the fields.
