Definition: custom control

A software routine that adds some enhancement to an application. Custom controls run the gamut, from providing a small graphical interface feature to a full imaging, spreadsheet or text editing extension. Depending on the development system, custom controls are either linked into the application when it is written or maintained as independent executable files that are called at runtime. See DLL, VBX and OCX.
