Definition: cold cathode

A cold cathode is a cathode in a gas-filled electron tube that is not heated by a filament. The voltage potential within the tube is sufficient to ionize the gas and cause the current to flow. For example, the backlights in earlier LCD screens were cold cathode fluorescent tubes, which were later replaced with LEDs (see CCFL). See cathode.
