Software or a stand-alone hardware appliance that redirects disk reads and writes from the local network to a service on the Internet. By converting network file input/output (I/O) commands to Internet HTTP protocols, the data is transferred to and from the cloud storage datacenter rather than to the local storage devices such as a storage area network (SAN) or network attached storage (NAS) device.
