Definition: browser-based application

An application that runs within the Web browser. The instructions, typically written in a combination of HTML and JavaScript, are embedded within the Web page that is downloaded from a website. The advantage of browser-based applications is that they can run in a Windows PC, Mac or Linux machine, since all Web browsers are required to render HTML and execute JavaScript in the same manner, no matter their environment. In practice, there are minor differences in page rendering, which are generally tolerable. See Web application, JavaScript and HTML.
