Definition: block explorer

Software for viewing the transactions in a blockchain. Also called a "blockchain explorer," a block explorer displays the list of blocks starting with the last block number. It shows various elements such as the date, size and fees associated with each block. Block explorers typically let people search the chain by sender and receiver address, block number or block hash. That means if a public Bitcoin address is matched to a particular person, that person's crypto transactions and coin balance can be obtained. See crypto address, Bitcoin block explorer, blockchain and crypto ticker.

A Blockchain Explorer
BlockCypher is used to view the Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Dogecoin and Dash blockchains. This Ethereum example shows the block number (height), date and time (age), total amount of ETH coins transferred and associated fees. See Ethereum.
