Silicon that is heavily doped with sulfur in order to make it more sensitive to infrared (IR) radiation. Used for IR detectors, black silicon is more efficient at absorbing photons and releasing electrons. It is created by bombarding silicon wafer surfaces with short-pulse femtosecond lasers while exposed to sulfur hexaflouride and other dopants. See
